The Texas DPS knowledge exam contains 30 questions. You must answer at least 21 correctly (70% passing score), which means you can miss up to 9 questions and still pass.

Under TTC §545.157, drivers approaching a stopped emergency vehicle, tow truck, or TxDOT vehicle with flashing lights must vacate the lane closest to the vehicle or slow down to 20 mph below the posted speed limit (or 5 mph if the speed limit is under 25 mph).

Under 37 TAC §15.51 and TTC §521.1425, Texas DPS requires 20/40 visual acuity or better with or without corrective lenses. If corrective lenses are required to achieve 20/40, Restriction B is placed on your license. Applicants scoring between 20/50 and 20/70 are referred to an eye doctor with Form DL-62.

Immediate failure occurs if you cause a motor vehicle collision, commit any moving traffic violation (such as running a red light or stop sign), perform a dangerous action where the examiner must take physical or verbal control, or lose more than 30 points on the test.

You must be at least 15 years old and enrolled in or have completed a state-approved 32-hour driver education course (concurrent or block method).

Your application fee covers 3 testing attempts within 90 days. If you fail all 3 times, you must submit a new application and fee.
